Helpful Tips for Stargazing in Midcoast Maine

Light pollution has seriously impacted our view of the night sky. Escape the city lights and experience a clear night of stargazing in Maine’s Midcoast region at Newagen Seaside Inn. Step outside of your room or cottage and gaze at the constellations and planets from the comfort of our resort grounds. Or head off-site for an even clearer view of the night sky at destinations like Ocean Point Preserve or Coastal Rivers Conservation Trust. Add stargazing to your vacation itinerary, and use these helpful tips to make the most of your outing:

Stargazing Tips

Grab a blanket, find a spot on our lawn, and gaze into the night sky during your stay at Newagen Seaside Inn:

  • Stargazing is best on clear, cloudless nights. Check the weather forecast in Southport to determine the best time to go.
  • Let your eyes adjust to the darkness and avoid looking at bright lights like your phone screen.
  • Use a star chart or astronomy app to help identify celestial objects
  • Bring binoculars for a closer view of the night sky.

Stargazing Spots in Midcoast Maine

Contact the local astronomy group, Central Maine Astronomical Society, for recommendations on when and where to stargaze. Join one of their monthly star parties and learn more about local astronomy and preserving dark sky sites.

  • Ocean Point Preserve is the closest stargazing spot to our resort, located in East Boothbay. Enjoy wide-open night sky views from the largest wetland areas on Linekin Neck.
  • Drive 20 miles to the Damariscotta region and enjoy stargazing along 50 miles of trails at Coastal Rivers Conservation Trust. Gaze into the night sky from the trails at Salt Bay Farm, Huston Landing, and Bass Rock Preserve.
  • Make the hour’s drive to Reid State Park and enjoy incredible views of the Milky Way over the Sheepscot River.
  • If you are interested in a guided tour, we recommend driving to the Blueberry Pond Observatory in Pownal. This tour includes viewing the night sky through a telescope, learning about deep-sky objects, and spotting star clusters, galaxies, and more.
