A Guide to Spending a Day on Monhegan Island in Maine

The waters surrounding Southport and Newagen Seaside Inn are filled with unique islands waiting for you to explore. Whether you make the trip to Cabbage Island for its traditional clam bake or tour the Burnt Island Lighthouse, every island is home to exciting and entertaining things to do. One island that is worth repeat trips is Monhegan Island, a rocky island off the coast of Maine.

How to Get to Monhegan Island

The only way to reach this island is by boat. Three ports in Maine have ferries to bring you over, but the best one for guests at our family-friendly resort is in Boothbay Harbor. Balmy Days Cruises offers daily runs to Monhegan Island from June to October. The first ferry leaves at 9:30 a.m., and the last one arrives back at Pier 8 at 4:30 p.m. The boat ride is on the longer side and can take up to an hour and a half. Once you arrive, you have a little under four hours to explore. You will have to book each leg of your trip separately.

For an added adventure, book the Trip Around the Island tour, which leaves from Monhegan Wharf at 2 p.m. for a 30 minute trip around the island. You can make the trip from your own boat for more flexibility on your arrival and departure times. If you are captaining your own voyage, be sure to call harbor master at 207-542-9345 or channel 19.

What to Do during Your Time on the Island

You won’t be able to bring your car with you, which means you’ll be exploring the island on foot. While the island is only about a square mile in area, there is plenty to do and see.

Don’t worry if you can’t fit all the adventures in one visit. This island is worth a repeat visit every time you stay at our Boothbay Harbor resort.
