Here Are 3 of the Best Southern Maine Wineries
Oyster River Winegrowers
The Oyster River Winegrowers story begins with Brian Smith, the owner. Smith’s traditional education in winemaking and innovative nature combine to create a one-of-a-kind winery experience in Warren, Maine (just an hour northeast of Newagen Seaside Inn). Smith strives to create wines that may have been common in pre-industrial times. The Oyster River Winegrowers harvesting process is as natural as it gets; nothing artificial is added to the varietals and no refrigeration is needed on this family-owned farm. For a truly homegrown, self-sustaining winery experience, be sure to stop at Oyster River Winegrowers!
Savage Oakes Vineyard and Winery
Another Southern Maine winery near Boothbay Harbor is Savage Oakes Vineyard and Winery! This Union, Maine, vineyard is lovingly owned and operated by the Savage family. Since 1985, this property has been home to a herd of cattle, blueberry fields, and the vineyard itself. Today, the winery operates nearly four acres that grow 10 varieties of grapes. What makes this spot unique is its combination of old and new — the family recently added 95 solar panels to its 18th-century barn! The hour-long drive over from Boothbay Harbor is worth it for some delicious local wine and fun summer events.
Located just an hour and 20 minutes south of Newagen Seaside Inn is Cellardoor Winery in Lincolnville, Maine. This winery is a part of the Maine Wine Trail and boasts a unique story! Over 100 years ago, a homeless traveler was welcomed to the farm. Upon his departure, he carved a universal symbol on the cellar door that let fellow travelers know they would find hospitality there. Each bottle of this winery’s white, red, and specialty wines dons the “hobo symbol” to this day! Be sure to visit one of Cellardoor’s two locations and attend a wine-inspired event.
Newagen Seaside Inn is just a short drive away from Boothbay Harbor on Southport Island, yet feels worlds away. Our remote, oceanfront property offers a lodging experience you won’t find anywhere else. Experience comfortable beds, bright rooms, and shimmering views of Cape Newagen when you stay with us. Stunning views of Maine’s natural landscape is just the beginning of what you’ll enjoy here.
In addition to our state-of-the-art cottages and private guest rooms, our on-property restaurant offers farm-to-table favorites and complimentary breakfast. Plus, families return to our historic inn again and again for our premium amenities like games, activities, and on-property events! There’s no place quite like Southport Island, one of the best places to visit on the Maine coast. Isn’t it time you grab a glass of wine, sit back in your Adirondack chair, and look out over the ocean?
