About Cabbage Island, ME

The History of the Island

The Cabbage Island story begins in the early 1900s with the Holbrook family. In 1901, a man by the name of Ezekiel Holbrook purchased the island from his father. The island saw several different proprietors through the years. When Donald and Ruth Leavitt purchased the property in 1948, significant changes came to the island. For 23 whole summers, Ruth hosted a twice-daily clambake on the island, transporting visitors to and from the popular event using ferries. After Mrs. Leavitt sold the island in 1983, it became abandoned.

A Continued Tradition

In 1986, Mr. Wayne Moore purchased the island. It wasn’t long before locals asked him to bring back the clambake tradition that the Leavitt family had popularized. With the help of the Boothbay Harbor community, the Moore family, and Mrs. Leavitt herself, clambakes were brought back to Cabbage Island. Today, the tradition continues! Two clambakes are hosted each day of the week between June and September. This is one of the best things to do in Maine in July!
