What to Know about 5 Islands in Maine

Just off the coastline of Midcoast Maine, there are dozens of islands, both large and small. Each one is unique and filled with adventure.

1. A popular island for travelers to explore is Monhegan Island. During your visit, explore hiking trails, spend time at the Monhegan Museum of Art & History, or walk to one of their small beaches to kick back and relax before enjoying lunch on the island.

2. Everyone needs to head to Cabbage Island at least once to experience its famous clambakes, which take place during the summer. The island is also home to various activities, including hiking, horseshoes, volleyball, and badminton.

3. Damariscove Island is one of the preserves that falls under the Boothbay Region Land Trust. Found six miles out to sea, the hourglass-shaped island features easy hiking trails on the southern portion and a protected bird nesting area on the northern half.

4. Just off the coast of Southport is Burnt Island and the Burnt Island Lighthouse. This half-acre area is home to several historic buildings, including an active light station. Go for a tour with the keeper who will teach you about living in a lighthouse in the 1950s.

5.  Another island that’s part of the BRLT is Indiantown Island Preserve. Walk along the .9-mile loop trail on the island’s northern part, which can only be accessed by boat.

To reach most of these islands, you’ll need to book your tickets from a charter service, like Balmy Days Cruises.
