A Checklist of Places to Learn about Maine History

Maine’s history dates back decades since its statehood was established in 1820. There are countless sites that showcase the history of the 23rd state, and some of them are just a short drive away from our Boothbay Harbor resort.

Explore the history of Southport at the Hendrick’s Hill Museum. Donated to the town in 1987, this house once belonged to the Cameron family. Wander the exhibits to learn was life was like for this family and many others back in the day.

With six rooms filled with artifacts, there is no shortage of things to discover when visiting the Boothbay Region Historical Society. The history collection features family histories, photographs, maps, town records, and more.

Give yourself plenty of time to explore the 35-acre grounds of the Railway Village Museum. Feel like you stepped back in time as you explore the buildings preserved in a recreated village. Don’t forget to go for a ride on the train, which departs on the hour between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. – visit their website for departure times and dates. 

Open daily from Memorial Day to Labor Day, Fort Edgecomb Historic Site has something for everyone. Learn about the fort’s history from the interpretive panels before taking in views from the horizontal musket ports in the Blockhouse. It’s a perfect spot to bring a picnic lunch overlooking the Sheepscot River. 

See what life was like for a sea captain in the 19th century at Castle Tucker. The artifacts inside this ornate mansion tell the story of the Tucker family. Join one of the tours offered every half hour between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. – visit their website for hours and availability.
