The 5 Best Preserves near Southport
Some of the best examples of Maine’s natural beauty are the nature preserves that make up the Boothbay Region Land Trust (BRLT). On your next stay, visit one of these spots to reconnect with nature.
– Penny Lake features a freshwater wetland and adjoining woodland. Walk the half-mile loop trail that includes an apple orchard. There are also several other out-and-back trails, which are great for visitors of all ages. Keep an eye out for the wildlife like deer and migratory birds that call this area home.
– Indiantown Island is found at the northern end of Ebenecook Harbor in the Sheepscot River. The 60-acre island is only accessible by boat, and BRLT manages trails on the northern portion of the island. This island, once used extensively by Native Americans, is now an excellent spot for birdwatching.
– Linekin & Burley are two connecting adjacent preserves that stretch from Route 96 to the Damariscotta River. There are about three miles of trails to explore through various terrains. These trails can be a bit more challenging, so we don’t recommend hiking them if you are visiting with younger children.
– Ocean Point can be found in the largest wetland area on Linekin Neck. This area includes Tibbetts Pond, which the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife designated as a waterfowl wildlife habitat. The pond is a popular spot for ice skating in the winter.
– Porter Preserve on Barters Island is a 23-acre spot that gives visitors panoramic views of the Sheepscot River. Hike the 1.1-mile trail through heavily wooded areas or relax on one of the benches to take in the scenic views. You might just see a seal or two sunbathing during low tide.
There are several other beautiful preserves that are part of the BRLT, so you have plenty of new spots to check out every time you visit us.
