What You Need to Know About the Hendrick’s Head Lighthouse in Maine

About the Lighthouse

Just off the beaten path in Maine is Hendrick’s Head Lighthouse, a gorgeous and historic landmark that has stood the test of time. The 43-foot tower was built in 1829, rebuilt in 1875, and appears small compared to many other lighthouses in the Midcoast region. It’s located off the coast of beautiful Southport, Maine, one of the best places to visit on the Maine coast.

Though petite in appearance, this lighthouse has a dramatic past! In the tower’s early days, the Hendrick’s Head Lighthouse keeper rescued a small child (who was riding tumultuous waves on a makeshift floatation device) during a storm. Another local legend associated with this lighthouse involves the ghost of a woman who visited the site in the early 1900s. Known as the “Ghost Lady of the Dusk,” some still claim to see her as the sun sets!

What to Know Before You Visit

Whether you’re looking for stunning coastal views or simply want to appreciate the historic beauty of this 19th-century lighthouse, viewing and snapping a photo of the Hendrick’s Head Lighthouse by boat is a must! It’s important to note that the structure is privately owned and therefore off-limits to the public. However, visitors and locals alike still enjoy the sight of this restored structure from a short distance away at Hendrick’s Head Beach. We also recommend going sailing in Maine and catching a glimpse from out at sea! The beach is just a short 10-minute drive away from Newagen Seaside Inn and 13 minutes away from downtown Boothbay Harbor. Hendrick’s Head Beach is one of the Boothbay Harbor area’s best beaches! During a visit to this beach, you’ll be able to access to a small island that’s fun to explore at low tide.

Other Fantastic Lighthouses Around Boothbay Harbor

The Hendrick’s Head Lighthouse is just one of many lighthouses to discover in the Boothbay Harbor area. We recommend making time to go on a lighthouse cruise in Boothbay Harbor or visit a few more of the area’s historic structures. Here are three more lighthouses to check out when in town:

  • Pemaquid Point Light: This unassuming, all-white lighthouse has a colorful history you won’t soon forget. Be sure to visit the on-site museum, art gallery, and surrounding park!
  • Burnt Island Light: The most visibly prominent lighthouse in Boothbay Harbor is the Burnt Island Light. Its signature red light is visible for 12 miles, and its foghorn can still be heard throughout the harbor!
  • Cuckolds Light: Another lighthouse just minutes away from Newagen Seaside Inn is the Cuckolds Light, a tiny structure surrounded by crashing waves and unique geological structures.
